Introduction to Multiculturalism

Today Republic of Azerbaijan declared multiculturalism its state policy. One of the key conditions for the successful realization of this policy is teaching academic knowledge on multiculturalism in the local higher education institutions. Introduction to Multiculturalism has been taught in some local higher education institutions so far. Since multiculturalism is the country’s state policy, the course is designed for all the majors in BA. It consists of 45 hours of lectures.Introduction to Multiculturalism is a subject with theoretical and practical importance taught at the Department of Languages and Social Sciences, Azerbaijan Institute of Theology. It is an interdisciplinary course. It uses theoretical provisions of philosophy, politology, history, sociology, culturology and other social sciences. The primary goal of the course is to introduce multiculturalism as a social event, ideology, policy and a lifestyle to BA students; explain its importance in the modern world; study the historical experience of the world countries as well as Azerbaijan and strengthen tolerance among students. To achieve this goal Introduction to Multiculturalism puts forward implementation of following tasks:

  • Explain the subject and importance of multiculturalism to students
  • Introduce the essence of multiculturalism, its theoretical and ideological foundations, reasons and historical conditions of its emergence
  • Explain the ideas of multiculturalism and tolerance developed in the history of social and philosophical thought
  • Introduce the importance of multiculturalism for the regulation of religious diversity in society
  • Introduce the importance of multiculturalism for the regulation of ethnic and national diversity in society
  • Familiarize students with the experience of the world states for the regulation of ethnic and cultural diversity in the modern world
  • Explain mutual relations between multiculturalism and socio-economic development of the country
  • Explain mutual relations between multiculturalism and foreign policy
  • Discuss the history and main models of multiculturalism policy in the world countries
  • Explain the activities of National Leader Heydar Aliyev as a political founder of Azerbaijani multiculturalism
  • Inform students about President Ilham Aliyev’s activity in the successful implementation of multiculturalism policy in Azerbaijan
  • Explain the essence and characteristics of Azerbaijan model of multiculturalism, its basic principles and directions
  • Discuss the activities carried out by the State of Azerbaijan and Heydar Aliyev Foundation in the field of multiculturalism and international events
Arabic language -1 (Arabic alphabet, phonetics and grammar explanations on text)

The course aims to develop students’ reading and writing skills with a focus on correct spelling and grammar rules and improve their oral communication skills through practical and theoretical information. It is designed for students specializing in Religious and Islamic Studies. It provides students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge for the comprehension of modern Arabic texts with social and political themes with the help of a dictionary and necessary translation skills.

English-1

The course addresses the latest technology for teaching English. It aims realization of didactic and informative educational goals together with teaching English in a complex way. English-1 focuses on modern teaching methods and forms. It develops students’ English language skills from pre-intermediate to advanced level.

Civil Defense

Civil defense is a mandatory subject and included in the curricula of government and private schools as a special subject. It is taught in conformity with the programs in effect. The main objectives of Civil Defence course are

  • to study the provision of stable activity of objects in emergency cases during war and peace
  • to study the provision of stable activity of objects in emergency cases during war and peace
  • to study the characteristics of natural disasters peculiar to the Republic of Azerbaijan (earthquakes, floods, landslides, etc.), production accidents, defence of inhabitants and region during environmental emergency situations and accidents
  • to master the skills for evaluation of the condition during emergency situstions
Informatics and Computer Technology

The course focuses on information about Windows operating systems, desktop, menus, word text editor, writing and saving texts, printing, excel spreadsheet editors and formulas for calculations. It will also introduce some program applications in Microsoft Office package. The objective of the course is to educate students on the latest knowledge in this field and utilization of word and excel programs.

Azerbaijani history

The course consists of theoretical and practical classes. It introduces the description of all fundamental concepts and their application, ancient, medieval and modern domestic and foreign policy.It covers the sources of Azerbaijani history, archaeological excavations, ancient times, medieval times, history of modern period. Students are informed about present domestic and foreign policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and its priorities. The main goal of the course is to educate students about the history and traditions of Azerbaijani statehood of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Farsi language

Farsi language is designed for the students specializing in Religious Studies (050214). The course aims to develop knowledge system of students on all four skills in Farsi: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Thus, it focuses on the formation and improvement of students’ lexical base. Students will be taught basic grammatical elements of Farsi language through practical exercises in accordance with their lexical base. Throughout the course, students will master the skills and knowledge to analyze simple texts they read.Theywill learndaily words and phrases and acquire the skills to use them in oral and written speech.The textbooks includephonetic assignments apart from lexical materials, and this helps students to master the phonetic elements for improving their listening skills. Grammatical rules are explained briefly and they are integrated with lexical and phonetic assignments in the textbooks.This type of design plays a special role in facilitating students’ grammatical knowledge and stimulates teaching process. The main goal is to study religious factor in social problemsthrough sociological analysis of religion. It also aims ensuring students to discuss the information they acquired on a large scale.

Syntactical Characteristics of Arabic language

The course focuses on various parts of Arabic grammar. The first topics discuss relative pronouns and I bab infinitive forms.The next classes inform students thoroughly about cardinal numbers, time expressions, wish expressions, compound sentences and other grammatical topics. Apart from this, assignments on grammatical rules are also included in the course. The texts are accompanied by reinforcement tasks repeating all grammatical topics. The course aims to teach reading and translating texts correctly, organizing dialogues for strengthening speech and improve vocabulary skills.
